My Corsa won't start after a flat battery. What happened?

There is a problem which is unique to Vauxhall Corsa Vehicle which were manufactured around 2007-2008 that results in this model of vehicle stopping working. The symptoms are:

  • Tne battery was low or dead.
  • The keys still light up the dashboard but the engine won't start.
  • The key symbol on the dashboard is flashing.

If you are one of those people with an OBD scanner, you may see the following fault codes: P1632 / P1678 / P1679 / B3114 / B3925 / B3929 / B3977.

2
The technical explanation.

This vehicle requires a constant minimum of 7 volts or greater to be supplied to the BCM (Body Control Module).  As colder weather conditions cause batteries to drain faster, older batteries do not keep up the required constant voltage the BCM needs and this causes a problem.

The BCM is where all the vehicle security data is contained.  Because of a lack of voltage being supplied to the BCM it causes the data held inside the BCM to corrupt and therefore other essential modules in the vehicle, such as the instrument cluster and the ECM (Engine Control Module) are unable to communicate with the BCM and hence the vehicle will not start.

3
How is the problem solved?

If you are unfornate enough to experience this problem, it is going to be necessary to reset the BCM and then reprogrammed to the vehicle in order for it to match other security modules in the vehicle. This requires a genuine dealer tool called a Tech2.  And someone who is qualified to use it.

What the diagnostic fault codes mean:

  1. P1632 - Wrong Transponder Key
  2. P1678 - ECM (Engine Control Module) Identification Failed
  3. P1679 - Wrong Environment Identifier Received BCM (Body Control Module)
  4. B3114 - Remote Key Not Synchronised
  5. B3925 - Wrong Environment Identifier Received IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)
  6. B3929 - Wrong Environment Identifier Received SDM (Sensor Diagnostic Module (Airbag)
  7. B3977 - Wrong Environment Identifier Received ECM (Engine Control Module)

It is NOT necessary to recover your vehicle to a Vauxhall Dealer as this can be fixed at the side of the road, or wherever your vehicle is located.  We have done this many times using our genuine dealer tool.

So what do I do now?

First of all, give us a call so that we can make sure you are experiencing the correct symptoms we expect for this problem.

Next, we will attend your vehicle's location.

In order to fix this problem, we usually require the Immobiliser security code - this is a 4 digit code which can usually be found together with the vehicle's handbook. Don't despir if you haven't got it though as we are able to get these codes.

In order to prevent the situation from happening again, make sure you have a good battery on your car. It is usually better to replace this before we attend.

With a new battery and the security code, we will reprogramme your BCU into your vehicle and this will solve the problem.

The process takes around 30 minutes - assuming there are no surprises - and the Car Key Company Sussex will have you back on the road in no time.
